Individual Motor Skills Programmes for pupils with D.C.D.
Perth Grammar School

Next Steps:-
The results of this project have provided the evidence needed to support a more inclusive approach for this type of provision, and in August 2002, individual exercise programmes will be part of the timetable for approximately 40 pupils. Pupils will complete 15 minutes of exercises on 4 days each week, senior pupils will help monitor the progress and target setting of each pupil. In addition the senior pupils involved will work towards achieving 'working with others' core skill at Intermediate 2.

Resources for the project have been kept to a minimum, and the exercises have been planned to show progression and allow pupils to achieve personal success. Our individual commitment, knowledge and skills, together with the support from our school and authority has enabled us to develop a programme which is now in a format that can be accessed by other schools wishing to develop such provision. We have developed a strategy which effectively identifies and addresses difficulties, and improves the attainment and self-esteem for a significant number of pupils at Perth Grammar School.

  • Identification of pupils with DCD difficulties.
  • Initial assessment of individual pupils, including video recording of individual motor skills at the beginning of the programme.
  • Identification of senior pupils who monitor and record daily programmes.
  • Teacher input for senior pupils: DCD and difficulties experienced by identified pupils, expectations and requirements to implement programmes, requirements to complete 'working with others'.
  • Teacher supervision of daily programmes
  • Re-assessment and evaluation of individual pupils' progress at the end of 12 weeks.
  • Overview and presentation of senior pupils for 'working with others core skills'.

The above requirements from both members of staff are set against the responsibilities and teaching requirements within their individual departments.
