Phase 1

5/11: Tutor training - l.s.
7/11: Tutee training - l.s.
9/11: P6 tutors and P3 tutees meet - 1st PR session - c.t's & l.s. available for trouble-shooting.
12 & 13/11: Paired reading as above.
C.T.'s arrange mutually convenient times for P.R. x3 weekly.
Project sustained in school over several weeks.
Questionnaires to teachers & pupils (l.s.)

Phase 2

8/2 afternoon & evening: Parent workshops - l.s.
Parents involved in P.R. sessions with their own child, asked pertinent questions and were keen to sustain the project by supporting it from home.
Mid-April: Review progress - questionnaires home for parents (l.s.)
End of April: Parent workshop feedback & follow-up. See extract:
"We're delighted to report huge success due to your efforts at home with your child. Results of questionnaires gave results as follows:

  • 74% of children were more confident in reading
  • 63% of children enjoyed reading more.
  • 56% reported fewer mistakes
  • 63% commented on steadier flow of reading.
  • 48% showed more life and expression in their reading

93% of parents intend to continue paired reading. (l.s.)

Comments included:
I have noticed a marked improvement in Nicola's attitude to reading she reminds me of the need to do reading.
"Michael's confidence has improved he attempts words which he clearly has never seen before and very often gets it right, much to my surprise.
"Evan is reading a wide variety of texts and I am feeling much more involved in the progression of his reading skills.

Phase 3

At this meeting a parent group was formed to provide:

  • school based support where necessary
  • accounts of PR experiences to other parents.
