Raising Attainment in Credit Level Science

Why was this partnership activity necessary - concerns, aims, difficulties etc?

  • To raise pupil self-esteem, motivation and attainment
  • To improve the ethos and consequently the engagement of pupils.

Where does this partnership operate?
Within the Science department, linking with the APT Science (S3/4), Lochgelly High School.

When does this work happen?
3 x 40 minutes per week throughout the session.

How does the scheme work? How is it maintained, sustained and evaluated?
Tutorial group support for pupils identified by APT Science and LSS as capable of attaining a 1 or 2 at credit level - 22-25 pupils in total (8 per tutorial group) with LSS input through bidding system. Evaluate through SQA results and pupil response to participation - 50% pass rate at credit level in 2001.

What are the benefits? What difference does this partnership make?
Highest pass percentile at Standard Grade in school - the largest impact on SQA results at credit level. Job satisfaction, pupil success, mutual respect between departments, cross curricular input, pupil perception of LSS enhanced at all levels of ability.
