Not 'Okay' but 'What If'? - Establishing Philosophical Enquiry

Why was this partnership activity necessary - concerns, aims, difficulties etc?

  • To help all children, including those with SEN, to develop reasoning skills and the confidence to participate effectively.
  • To encourage this through a strong, mutually supportive framework where the teacher is a facilitator.

Where does this partnership operate?
Throughout Kirkcaldy West Primary School - all 19 classes - and hopefully beyond!

When does this work happen?
Every week for an hour.

How does the scheme work? How is it maintained, sustained and evaluated?
From a relatively small start the scheme has grown over time. Although this was more rapid initially with strong working party support, progress is on-going and newest developments are very exciting. Working party enthusiasm, headed by L.S., and careful planning and step-by-step progression have been important factors in sustaining the project. Evaluation has taken place at every stage.

What are the benefits? What difference does this partnership make?
Helped children move towards achieving their true potential.

  • Improve quality of listening, talking and interaction.
  • Develop social, emotional and personal intelligence.
  • Develop critical and creative thinking skills.
  • Maintain their natural curiosity and develop 'Learning for Life'.
