Daily Reading Support
St Patrick's Primary School

Pupils at risk of failing for a number of reasons, e.g.:

  • Homework not returned
  • Lack of motivation
  • Reaching a stage when a little additional practice would make the difference between success and failure were nominated.
Six adults, parent helpers and Classroom Assistants were timetabled to support 13 pupils daily. Staff were delighted with the offer of daily help for these pupils for whom we feel that we can never do enough within the restrictions of full classroom curriculum and constantly trying to meet the needs of all children. Timetables were adjusted so that children involved did not miss direct teaching in other areas. Activities used differed throughout the session depending on age and stage of children involved, e.g. phonic games and core word practice in infants, preparation of discussion points and taping reading in middle and novels and research in upper school. All of the pupils involved re making progress, some have achieved the appropriate measurable standard but the most important feature of the support is the improved motivation and willingness among individuals to participate more fully across the curriculum. The disenchantment, which failure brings, has at least been delayed. This is realistically all we can claim for this year but we can only celebrate the moment. Parental appreciation has prompted further offers of involvement in life of school. Parents involved have improved their own skills and confidence and feel able to apply for positions in the job market.
